CLIMATE-FRIENDLY ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Generating
green income activities

Climate-friendly Entrepreneurship empowers youth to cultivate sustainability in Nkhata Bay. Together with Go Green Save Environment the project encourages initiatives that simultaneously promote financial stability and environmental responsibility, with emphasis on creating self-sustaining activities that can cover their operational costs and also generate surplus revenue.

The goal is to use the surplus to strengthen the local community and support future innovative, climate-conscious projects in collaboration with local organizations, young entrepreneurs, and stakeholders.

  • The idea with the briquettes is to create a more sustainable and cheaper alternative to the widely used charcoal. The charcoal requires a huge amount of tree-cutting and is a big environmental sinner. It is a carbon residue, produced by removing the water from the wood. It is primarily used for cooking and heating by the local households, companies, institutions, etc.

The project has succesfully developed a new formula and measurements. The briquettes are made from carbonized sawdust mixed with a binder composed of cassava flour and water.

We believe that with continued effort and innovation, our briquettes will become a staple in local households and businesses, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future in Nkhata Bay.

  • We aim to inspire other companies, farmers, and households in Malawi to acquire their own biogas plants and help make the world a bit greener.

Biogas is a renewable energy source that, through anaerobic digestion, converts organic matter into biogas and fertilizer. It can be used for cooking and heating homes.

The use of biogas will not only reduces methane emissions, but also decreases the use of the charcoal, which is the main reason for the thousands of trees being cut down every year here in Malawi.

  • This intervention aims to meet the demand for affordable drinking glasses in Nkhata Bay. Our aim is to repurpose old glass bottles abundant in the area into functional drinking glasses, providing a sustainable, cost-effective solution for the community.

Interventions

Progress

Biogas System

  • We succeeded in developing a cheap, long burning, low-smoking recipe for the briquettes, a sustainable alternative to charcoal

  • The next steps involve scaling up production, securing more orders, and continuously refining our product to meet the needs of our customers

Briquettes

  • At the eco-lodge Mayoka Village, we have installed a biogas plant, which will supply gas directly to our chefs in the kitchen, allowing them to cook on a biogas stove

  • The plan for the biogas plant is now to share the information with all interested parties to spread the knowhow

Glass Bottle Upcycling

  • Quality glasses made of glass bottles is being produced and sold to various actors in Nkhata Bay

  • Considerations for further optimization include adding another glass-cutting machine and personnel to expedite production
