NO WASTE IN THE BAY
Make Nkhata Bay
the cleanest town in Malawi
No Waste in the Bay is a collaboration between Mayoka Youth Hub, Go Green, Yefcot and District Environmental Office.
Nkhata Bay District lacks a comprehensive waste collection system, leading to pervasive littering throughout the area. Much waste is improperly disposed of, threatening the biodiversity, public health and climate.
We believe that everyone has the right to live in a clean town. To prevent the waste from being left in the streets, it is crucial to increase waste management in Nkhata Bay District. This includes better access to bins in town, better systems which can optimize the process of the bins being emptied and, last but not least, more focus on sorting and recycling the waste. All interventions that will reduce the pollution of soil, water and air and preserve quality of life and local environment.
Interventions
-
Nkhata Bay has very few places to leave one’s waste, and that is why it is an important aspect of the project to implement new bins. The project is implementing new biodegradable and non-biodegradable bins different places in town in close collaboration with the District and Market Council.
To nudge the public into using the bins, they are made visually appealing and eye-catching by adding quotes and paintings -
The project is hosting waste management workshops for students from secondary schools.
The workshop presents information about waste management including topics such as “What is waste management?”, “Why is it important?” and “Examples of sorted waste”.The students participate in a creative workshop where they learn how to recycle materials that would otherwise end up at the dumping sites into different forms of art.

The aim of the monthly clean up events are both to clear the streets from waste and to act as an awareness campaign that make people reflect and take action. At the clean ups we discuss waste management and sustainability and focus on creating a motivating atmosphere.
The project is part of a bigger agreement between Mayoka Youth Hub, Go Green, Yefcot and District Environmental Office to do clean-ups every month.
